Utah Cowboy Takes Victory Lap in Steer Wrestling, Will Go For Gold on Wednesday

SALT LAKE CITY (July 22, 2024) – It is always good to do well at your local rodeo but even a bigger deal when it is the only Gold Medal Rodeo in the World. Steer wrestler Kyler Dick of Oakley took top honors on Monday night at the 2024 Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo presented by Zions Bank in Salt Lake City.

Dick stopped the clock in 4.0 seconds to win the round and advance to the final round on Wednesday, July 24.

"It's awesome to rodeo in Utah,” stated Dick after making his victory lap at the Days of ’47 Arena. “We have the best fans. We can't say enough about you guys. We have the best rodeos."

He was quick to also credit his horsepower that carried him to the fast run.

"Horsepower is always the difference in our game,” Dick said. “I can't thank Stetson Jorgensen and 88 Ranches for letting us ride Mable. And having the haze horse on the other side, Eli Lord, he did an awesome job. I can't thank Stetson and Eli enough."

The Gold Standard in Rodeo features a total of 288 competitors, who will take their shot at a share of close over three-quarters of a million in prize money and a gold, silver or bronze medal that will be awarded on Wednesday, July 24. There will be 32 competitors in all the roughstock events (Bareback riding, Saddle Bronc riding and Bull riding) and timed events (Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Tie-down Roping, Breakaway Roping and Barrel Racing).

Kody Lamb took the first victory lap of the night winning the bareback riding with an 86.5-point ride aboard Sankey Rodeo’s MLW’s Irish Eyes. Lamb, of Sherwood Park, Alberta, will return for the gold medal round along with Cooper Cooke of Victor, Idaho.

Canada also graced the top of the leaderboard in the team roping with brother’s Dawson and Dillon Graham turning in the fastest time with a 3.7-second run. They will have a chance to earn their first gold medal along with the second-place team on the night Jake Smith and Douglas Rich.

The full field is divided into four groups of eight contestants each per performance. The top two scores or times per performance will advance to the Gold Medal Round. Scores/times from the Semi-Final performances will NOT carry forward to the Gold Medal Round (only to break ties). The eight (8) competitors in each event in the Gold Medal Round will compete in a sudden-death format with the winner collecting a Gold Medal and $10,000 cash.

Canada continued to dominate taking the victory lap in the saddle bronc riding with Ben Andersen landing atop the leaderboard with an 86-point ride on Sankey Rodeo’s Trophy Wife. In 2022, Allen Boore stood atop the gold medal stand and he will have a chance to get another gold, as he finished second on the night with an 85.5 on Championship Rodeo’s Damaged Goods.

Bailey Bates put on a clinic in the breakaway roping stopping the clock in 2.0 seconds. Bates of Tohatchi, NM, will be competing for her first gold medal and will forever remember her victory lap tonight in front of the rowdy Utah fans on Monday night. Joining her for a chance at gold will be Rylee George of Oakdale, California with a 2.8-second run. Neither lady has graced the medal stand before at the Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo — but 2024 might be their year.

It was a fast track tonight in the barrel racing with non-other than Kassie Mowry laying down the fastest run in a time of 16.86 seconds aboard Force The Goodbye “Jarvis.” Mowry, of Dublin, Texas, will be looking for her first gold medal on Wednesday. She also won the progressive round earlier in the week, so she is hoping to go three-for-three in Salt Lake City. Joining her is former rookie of the year in the WPRA Taycie Matthews who stopped the clock in 16.91 seconds.

The Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo presented by Zions Bank, is taking place at the $17.5 million state-of-the-art Days of ’47 Arena at the Utah State Fairpark, custom designed and built for rodeo. The venue — an outdoor arena located in the heart of Salt Lake City — features over 10,000 stadium-style seats.

Bringing the night to a close and the crowd to their feet was Utah’s own Hayes Weight in the bull riding. Weight, of Goshen, topped the leaderboard with a 91-point ride aboard Sankey Rodeo’s Magic Touch. Weight has been on a hot streak as of late riding unridden bulls with his previous one coming a couple of weeks ago in Colorado Springs, CO at the NFR Open, until tonight when he conquered Magic Touch. He would like nothing more than to stand atop the gold medal stand on July 24 and the way he rode tonight; he has a very good chance. Rawley Johnson of Ririe, Idaho, finished with an 87 on Andrews Rodeo’s Jokers Alibi and will advance to the finals.

Action continues at the Utah Day of ’47 Rodeo on Tuesday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Tickets are still available. For more information on the event visit www.utahdaysof47rodeo.com.
