Gold Medal Round Taking Shape in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (July 23, 2026) – The cowboys and cowgirls brought the heat during the third night of the 2026 Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo presented by Zions Bank. The field is taking shape for an exciting gold medal round on July 25.

The G.O.A.T. in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing Lisa Lockhart took the victory lap on night No. 3 to earn her spot in the gold medal round. Lockhart of Oelrichs, S.D., stopped the clock in 17.14 seconds on Cutter to punch her ticket for a chance at gold in Salt Lake City. She is seeking her 20th consecutive Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which would set a record in the sport. A gold medal in Utah, could move her up the world standings for a shot at the gold buckle at the end of the season awarded to the world champion. Hayle Gibson Stillwell, who recently set an arena record in Calgary, finished second on the night aboard Piper with a time of 17.23 seconds. Both ladies will be bringing the heat in the gold medal round come Saturday.

The Gold Standard in Rodeo features a total of nearly 400 competitors, who will take their shot at a share of over three-quarters of a million in prize money and a gold, silver or bronze medal that will be awarded on Saturday, July 25. There will be 40 competitors in all the events (Bareback riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Breakaway roping, Barrel Racing and Bull riding).

It has been a hot minute since saddle bronc rider Brody Cress last won a gold medal in Salt Lake City. He grabbed gold in 2021 and is looking for more gold in 2026 after posting a 91-point ride on Championship Rodeo’s Pow Wow Nights he will have that chance. Joining Cress of Hillsdale, Wyoming in the gold medal round will be another past gold medalist Brody Wells also of Wyoming. Wells of Powell, won the gold in 2024 and earned his spot to grab more gold with an 88.5 on his reride horse Pete Carr’s Tony Hawk. It is shaping up to be a battle of the titans come Saturday in Salt Lake.

The timed events, excluding barrel racing, are a two-go average with the top two advancing to the final round. The roughstock is a one go with the top two advancing to the gold medal round. The barrel racing is one go with a total of 40 barrel racers with the top two advancing each night to the gold medal round.

Utah’s own Cash Robb also earned a chance to run one more at the Days of ’47 Arena finishing second in the average on Thursday night with a 9.2. Robb of Altamont won the gold in 2022 and hoping to stand atop the medal stand one more time to add to his gold collection. Traver Johnson finished atop the leaderboard on night No. 3 with an 8.9.

Clay Smith and Coleby Payne punched their ticket to Saturday night with total time of 9.7 seconds on two head. Colemon Proctor and Travis Graves also earned their spot in a time of 11.2 seconds.

Scores/times will NOT carry forward to the Gold Medal Round (only to break ties). The eight (8) competitors in each event in the Gold Medal Round will compete in a sudden-death format with the winner collecting a Gold Medal.
